Symphonic Band I (Mastery Band)
The Lakeside Symphonic Band I, or Sym I, is the highest level musical class at Lakeside High School. The group consistently performs at the highest rating level (VI) for high school performing ensembles, and routinely gets superior ratings at the Large Group Performance Evaluation. Sym I has performed in joint concerts with Georgia State University and Emory University, and performed in the Kennesaw State University Concert Festival three times. The group has commissioned five pieces of music in the last twenty years by composers, and is routinely featured among the performing groups at Lakeside High and DeKalb County.
Currently, this class meets 7th period, and is made up of mostly seniors and juniors. Sophomores are able to take this class if they play an instrument needed by the group or if they have made all-state. Freshmen are generally not allowed to take this course.
Each year, Sym I performs at the Yellow Daisy Festival at Stone Mountain Park in September, and is the featured ensemble for all cluster and feeder concerts not involving the marching band. In addition, this group performs in the annual Holiday Gala Concert each December.
