What is marching band?

This group performs a themed halftime show each year incompetition, and routinely places near the top of their class. It is a traditional marching band which contains Woodwind instruments (Flutes, Clarinets, and Saxophones), Brass Instruments (Trumpets, Horns, Trombones, Euphoniums/Baritones and Tubas), Marching Percussion (Snare Drums, Multi Tenor Drums, Bass Drums and Cymbals), a Front Ensemble (Marimba, Vibraphones, Xylophones, Bells, auxiliary percussion and sometimes drumset, guitar, and electric bass), and a Colorguard (choreography, flags, rifles and sabres). 

 

Where does the marching band perform?

The Lakeside Viking Marching Band performs during varsity football games, pep rallies, large school functions, and the Lakeside Homecoming Parade. They also perform at the DeKalb Co. Marching Festival, the Dragon*Con parade, the Sandy Springs Sparkle Parade, and the Inman Park Parade.

 

The Lakeside Viking Band has marched with the Kennesaw State2023 Dragon Con parade University Marching Owls in parades and football games, and competes in local and out-of-state marching competitions, including in Tennessee and Alabama. They've also showcased their talent in the Waikiki Thanksgiving Parade in Hawaii and were highlighted in Episode 7 of the DCSDTV series "Music Matters."

 

In fall 2024, this group will be performing at Talladega Superspeedway's Yellawood 500 in Alabama. 

 

 

Who can be in marching band? 

Marching Band is open to all Lakeside High School students with a background in instrumental music or dance. You do not need to know how to march to join--we will teach you! If you are not sure whether you have the instrumental experience to join to marching band, talk to Dr. Fairchild.

 

Pep talk before a gameCompletion of a middle school band program or Beginning Band is necessary for entry into the Woodwind or Brass Sections, however exceptions can be made if a spot is open. 

 

Tryouts for the Marching Percussion, Front Ensemble, and Colorguard occur every April.

 

This group counts as a Varsity sport for the DCSD, which gives all members credit to exempt a second PE class.

 

What is the marching band schedule?

  • Band camp occurs in July during the 2nd and 3rd weeks before school begins.
  • Practices are every Tuesday and Thursday throughout the football season (August - November). 
  • Games are on Friday nights.
  • Other events such as parades and marching competitions occur throughout the season (usually on Saturdays).
  • Sectionals for segments of this group may occur at other times as needed.

What is the refund policy?

Although every possible situation cannot be addressed, the following are the general rules covering payment refunds.

  1. If a student moves out of the school district prior to band camp, or becomes medically unable to participate in the band program, a full refund will be provided.
  2. If a student withdraws from the program before July 15th, all funds paid IN EXCESS of $250.00 will be refunded.
  3. If a student withdraws from the program on or after July 15th, no refund will be made.
  4. Special circumstances should be brought to the attention of the LBA officers or the Band Director. If you cannot make a payment due to hardship, please contact Dr. Fairchild to set up a conference immediately.


What do marching band dues cover?

Marching Band: $650

  • Show and stands music
  • Drill written by a professional drill writer

Other Items

  • Flip folder for music
  • Competition fees
  • Bus fees for student and equipment transportation
